How does the skin absorb topical creams?
Chemical absorption through the skin is not as simple as you might want to believe. To begin, there are two classifications:
- Skin penetration, and
- Absorption
And here’s the thing; not all the active ingredients can absorb directly in the skin without some extra assistance. Penetration through the skin happens in the following way.
The active ingredient, or the chemical, passes through the skin’s outer layer (the stratum corneum) and penetrates the skin’s deeper layers. In contrast, absorption is when a chemical doesn’t necessarily enter the deeper layers of skin but is absorbed into the bloodstream.
Skin penetration and skin absorption may sound deceptively similar, but they are starkly different.
